Unique Photo Gifts

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Instead of scouring the mall for gifts this holiday season why not consider using your cherished photos to create a unique personalized gift for family and friends?

There are so many ways now, made easy with online sites and programs, to create unique personal gifts using your digital photos. Photo Books offer a way of creating a high quality photo album, book bound with text and artwork options. Calendars are always a perfect little gift or stocking stuffer, what Grandmother would not love a calendar of her precious grandchildren? Online sites offer easy ways of editing pictures as well, change to black and white, sepia, antique, add frames, create post cards, stickers, blur edges, so many ways to spruce up your photos and have a little fun in the process! Place your photos on mugs, mousepads, aprons, magnets, coasters, tote bags, and tee shirts. Create personalized Holiday greeting cards as well.

Another unique idea is to have a collage of your photos created. Collages are perfect unique gift ideas for anyone. Photos are blended together for a seamless look from your digital images or from your scanned photos. Themes include; weddings, babies, children, parties, trips, family reunions, or anything you can think of. Collages can then be framed for display, put on a stretched canvas or used on mousepads, calendar pages, a very unique cutting board, puzzle, or any other photo gift.

A calendar for the grandparents, using pictures from throughout the year and a few themed collages. New baby in the family? A baby collage printed on a mousepad for the new mother or father to have for their office. A collage of wedding photos for a newlywed couple, matted and framed and tied with a red ribbon makes a lovely gift!

So this year, forget the bath salts and take the plunge into the digital era and give unique gifts that your family and friends will cherish forever!

Organize Your Photos

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Almost a century photo books are used to store most precious photos. And they are widely used even today. The best photo books are personalized ones meant for special occasions like weddings and birthdays.

Organize Your Photos

There are not too many good and satisfying softwares for ordinary people like you and me that just want to download photos from our new digital camera which were taken on our last vacation. We don’t need the complicated and deadly frustrating features that require half a year course to understand. Most of the softwares on the market today have been tailored for the use of photography professionals, graphic designer artists and image processing technicians. These softwares are very very expensive and hard to use.

All we need is an easy way to organize, edit and share our pictures. This is when Google decided to develop software just for our needs. And so they came up with ‘Picasa’.

Picasa is surprisingly intuitive and easy to use, has very comfortable interface and relaxing graphics. The moment you enter Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures, you will be surprised of how many pictures Picasa found that you didn’t even know they exist. You can edit, share, organize in albums and print your pictures. Let’s find out about the new features Picasa presents:

-Editing: Optimize your digital pictures with Picasa on digital photo book: remove red-eyes, improve color saturation, sharpening and much more with just few simple clicks.

-Organize: With Picasa you can instantly locate and organize all pictures on your PC and create your own photo albums

-Share: Send your photos to your Friends and Family right from Picasa.

-Publish your pictures on your blog and creating your own picture website was never easier like with Picasa.

-Creating beautiful slide shows is simple and intuitive

Print your favorite photos at home or order professional high quality Photo books , collages or movies directly from Picasa.

In addition to the main features above Picasa also gives you the possibility to burn Gift CDs with Pictures inside to add label for every picture and it is able to perform a Ranking within all available images in order to choose the best ones.

As you can see Picasa offer great variety of options and features while keeping it simple as possible for the common amateur photographer like me.

With the free distribution of this excellent software product, Google has set a heavy milestone in the fast growing Digital Imaging business. No doubt that Picasa is the best choice now days:

You can visit Picasa Download center at http://www.picasa-officiale.com and Download the software for free.

Best regards and fun photo organizing.

Digital Photo Book

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

We used to print pictures from weddings and stick them into a wedding photo albums, sharing it with friends and family or for simply preserving precious memories. With the marriage of digital photography and digital publishing technology, everything changed and the ability to publish photographs in a coffee table style book (’subsidy or vanity publishing’ in legal terms) is now in reach of everyone with a digital camera, a computer and Internet access.

Digital Photo Book

While the technology for online photo sharing and online documents progresses, preparing a real best photo books with potentially hundreds of print resolution images and lines of text is better done offline. Photo book software is then able to optimize the files and the upload communication. Many photo book printing services are appearing in the UK; a comparison of two of the most compelling digital photo book contenders here:

Hints

Unlike computer prints photobooks will last for many generations. A photo book of family events or a holiday presents a personal memorybook. While the ‘Assistant’ Option in the CeWe Photo Book Software provided by FotoInsight can actually lay-out a photo book in less than the three minutes promised, taking more time, going back through the pages, adding some text and personal hints is highly recommended.

Less is More

Especially when images from several sources are being used (from friends cameras, mobile phones etc) it can be helpful to copy the image selection into a separate folder. Less is more applies for digital photo books, too. So skip poor or uninteresting images, as they will bore the spectator in a few years time. You may prepare some pages with many smaller images in scrapbook style and other pages with very few or even just a single image spreading over a double page, giving the reader a rest. Remember that preparing a coffee table style photo book is in now way different from publishing a book, which requires some proof reading, too.

Image editing

Avoid using hundreds of high-resolution images in one book as the computer might struggle with processing many large images. 200 ppi (in the corresponding format) is enough, it is not necessary to use jpegs larger than 1.5 MB, for most photos half a megabyte jpeg will do. Prepare entire pages as jpegs in Photoshop or other advanced editing packages to import these as a full page (page background) into the photo book.

Which service to use

Both services use software which needs to be downloaded and installed. This allows preparing the photo book offline in several sessions and optimizing the finished lay-out before uploading it for printing. Users who only want to make small books and are not comfortable with installing software may have a look at iPhoto, Snapfish or Kodak which offer a web browser based service. This however can not be recommended for larger, more elaborate books. The free software applications provided by the photo book printing services compared above use a different approach each and preference may depend on circumstances (e.g. Mac) and objectives (e.g. flexible lay-out, online sharing, time). Both FotoInsight as well as Printing-1 provide well printed and very enjoyable photo books.

Wedding Photo Albums

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Choosing a wedding album can be just as confusing and difficult as choosing a wedding photographer. They come in hundreds of styles, covers, colors, sizes, mounting options, etc.

Although there are lots of books and articles written for professional photographers about wedding albums, there’s almost nothing out there for brides. Sheesh! So here’s the 411:

Why do I need an album from my photographer? I’ve got the digital files, I can make my own prints and put them in my own album.

True, but since professional-quality, custom-made album companies only sell to professional photographers, you will have to buy an off-the-shelf consumer album. That means you either buy the type of album with slip-in plastic sleeves or a scrapbook-type album where you glue photos to a page. Some companies can print simple hardcover photo books. There’s nothing wrong with that – these types of options can still be attractive. Just make sure you get albums made with acid-free archival materials so your photos don’t discolor or disintegrate over time. However, if you want a truly professionally made, gorgeous album with either flush-mounting or professionally mounted in custom mats, you really have no other choice, you’ve got to buy one from your professional wedding photographer.

Why are wedding albums so expensive?

You can buy a photo album at the local drugstore for $19.95 and slip in all your 4×6 proofs and bam, you’re done! So why is your wedding photographer charging you $2,500 for that album? There are a couple of reasons for this:

(1) Professional-quality albums cost your photographer a lot of money. It is not unusual for your photographer to pay five, six or seven hundred dollars or more for a custom leather album. Custom bookbinding is expensive!

(2) It can easily take your photographer 2 full days to do their file preparation and retouching (on Photoshop) of all the images you’ve chosen for your album and then to do the design work on the album. You are paying for the photographer’s skill and time here, both as a photographer and graphic designer.

What is a flush-mount album? Is it better than a traditional album?

Flush-mounting means that the print itself is mounted all the way to the edge of the page. So the print itself is exactly the same size as the page it is mounted on. Most often, flush-mounting also includes digital graphic design. That means each page is designed using Photoshop or other graphic design software. That makes the design options nearly unlimited. Currently, flush-mount albums seem to be the most popular among today’s brides. As for whether or not flush-mount albums are better than traditional, I can’t say. It’s just a matter of personal preference.

Traditional Matted Albums

This is the style of album that’s been around for decades. With a traditional album, prints are placed in individual openings on cotton mats. There is a matted border around each page, so the photo itself doesn’t go to the edge of the page. While I love flush-mount albums, there’s something so classy and timeless about a matted album. Each image stands out on its own and gains importance.

Coffee Table Books

This most often refers to a book with photos printed on the actual pages. The pages are thin just like a regular book. Some couples prefer photo books to albums because they like the thinner, sleeker look. They can also be just as attractive. However, keep in mind that coffee table book pages will tear much more easily than true album pages, which are mounted on a rigid lining.

Cover options

Cover options are literally limitless. Although leather covers are standard, you can get almost anything you want: plexiglass, metal or fabric covers can be ordered. You can even send in your own fabric and have the album covered with it! Covers can include cover images or not, as well as your choice of text.

How to work with your photographer on your album design

One key consideration is how many images you want and how many pages you want. There are only so many images that will fit before the design becomes busy and cluttered. For example, I prefer a very clean, modern design. This works out to about on average 2 pictures per page in a digitally-designed flush-mount album and about 1.5 images per page in a traditional album. The bottom line here is that you should evaluate your photographer’s album design style just as you would their photographic style. Don’t be afraid to share your views on album design with your photographer.

It is my sincerest hope that every couple orders an album. In my experience, most people are so busy in their daily lives that they never get around to creating that gorgeous album themselves. This is really an investment in your most important memories. My goal is for you to be showing your album to your grandchildren – of course with tears in your eyes. Think of it this way: if your home catches fire and you have 30 seconds to grab one item as you rush out the door – you’re going to grab that wedding album, NOT the china or the toaster. ‘Nuff said!

Personalized Photo Book

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Sometimes is hard to choose the right present for your loved ones. Photo book can make a great present. The best photo books are those with personalized covers.

Personalized Photo Book

Last year I pondered this very question and after some research hit on the idea of a photo book. These books enable you to create your own hardback or paperback book, the pages of which are filled with photos of your choice. With some systems you can add annotations if you like, and you choose the arrangement and size of all the photos so you have total control.

For example, you could put all your best pictures of a babies first year in there. You could make your own photo book. One of a wedding or a favorite vacation. Or my personal favorite – a book featuring the photos of all the high points from the last year.

From photos of moving into your new home, to that weekend away, to having your first flying lesson, all the things that have made the last year special and memorable can be gathered together into one cohesive book as a wonderful way to remember what you have done and what you have experienced.

Many photographic shops offer this service though I personally used Lulu for my own. Being able to drag photos onto the page, rearrange them and reorder them at will makes for great fun – though sifting through all my photos to find the best ones, putting them in chronological order and deciding how best to display them took a lot longer than anticipated! So make sure you have the time necessary to make a really unique, original present.

Once you are happy with your design you can place your order and your photo book will be printed and dispatched to you ready for the big day. I just hope they appreciate all your hard work!

Make Your Own Photo Book

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Do you have a lot of photos just lying around. Don’t you want to do something creative with those photos? Photo memory books are a great way to store you photos.

Make Your Own Photo Book

Just because your photos are in electronic format, it doesn’t mean that you are stuck to viewing them on a screen. In fact, digital photos can be printed in many more attractive and creative ways than you could have dreamed of with old fashioned film. One of the exciting things that you can now do with your photos is to make your own best photo books.

A photo book is not a photo album. You don’t print the photos and then stick them into an album or put them in pockets. In a photo book, your photos are printed on to the page, just like in professional photograph books that you might buy in a bookstore. The books have custom covers with your text and even your pictures on them and they are professionally bound and printed on high quality paper.

Because you make your own photo book using photo book software on your computer, you can really get creative. Most photo book publishers let you choose from a wide selection of backgrounds and layouts for pages in your book. You can add text to pages in your choice of font and change your photos so that they are in black and white or sepia. You can even create your own storybooks and recipes book using your own photos and text if you like. Advanced digital scrapbooking techniques allow you to import beautiful and unique pages that you created in another software package or that you downloaded from a digital scrapbooking site.

But if you don’t have a lot of time or are just not artistically inclined, you can just choose a theme and group your photos into pages and have the photo book software make the photo book for you. You can always ‘tweak’ individual pages before you buy your finished book.

Photo books are a great way for you to show off your digital photos and to share them with family and friends. When you make a photo book, you are creating something that will bring joy to you and your family that you can enjoy together now and in the future. This is a wonderful way to preserve your treasured memories. And best of all, you can make your own photo book for as little as $10 for a small book or around $30 for a 8.5×11 book.

Photo Memory Books

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

If you want to preserve your photos for years or even generations to come then choose the best photo books. In photo book your precious photos will be save against moisture and light.

Photo Memory Books

The photo memory book can include these pictures as well as your words or captions and any other memorabilia. The memorabilia can be scans of programs, newspaper articles, or invitations.

Photo memory books are easily made with the software provided by one of the many photo book printer/publishers. This free software contains the layouts, backgrounds, and text options that you need to put your book together. You can then decide which size of book and type of cover you would like to complete your project. The output is a coffee table quality book that looks like you just bought at the book store.

Many times the ideas for a book are very obvious. For instance, you have been to a wedding and want to create a book of the pictures. Other times the ideas might not be so obvious because they might be a theme that could mean finding pictures that have been taken over a period of time such as a high school memory book that has been created for someone who is graduating.

Sometimes ideas are not as easy to come by as you might think. In order to find out the type of memory books people are making I scanned through several keyword searches and did an image search to come up with a list of 53 photo memory book ideas. From that list here are 14 great ideas for creating your own photo memory books:

  1. vacation
  2. retirement
  3. 50th anniversary

Best Online Photo Books

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Photo books come in different designs and sizes. You can also customize your photo book to personalize it for any special occasions. It all depends on how much money you want to spend for best photo books designs.

Best Online Photo Books

Smaller albums in the 5" x 7" range make excellent thank-you gifts for hosts, and are a great way to capture the memories of a special event such as a weekend outing, party, or reunion. Medium-sized albums come in either softcover or hardcover formats, and are well suited to lager projects such as baby books, family heritage albums, or albums featuring events where a considerable number of photos are taken and need to be preserved-holiday get-togethers or large reunions would be good examples of this type of event. Larger photo books are often 12" x 12", or larger. Larger books tend to be popular, since many more photos can be added to each page of the book. This in turn means that many more photographs can be featured in the book, overall. This may also make a larger book more cost-efficient than ordering a number of smaller books, one at a time. Many people also like larger photo books since the images appear larger, closer to their actual printed size.

As is to be expected, soft-cover books are less expensive than hardcover books, making them an excellent choice for smaller projects you would like to share with a number of people. Check with your online photo book provider-some companies will give you a discount on large orders. If you decide to order a number of photo books as gifts for the holidays or another special occasion, be sure to order well enough ahead so that the books arrive in time, and can then be given out in person or mailed to the intended recipients.

Softcover books are of course less sturdy than their hardcover counterparts. For this reason, many people choose small softcover photo books for projects that may not need to be preserved and handed down to future generations. Soft-cover photo books are more suited to everyday use: to be given to friends and family as a small thank-you gift, or as a fundraising project or gift to a teacher at a child’s school, for example.

Photo book design tips. If, on the other hand, your project is more labour and time intensive, and your goal is to preserve the photographs and memories for at least several more decades (perhaps even for several generations), then hardcover photo books are a good idea. Heritage book projects and other well-researched projects such as a collaborative book project by several members of the family, baby books, and digital scrapbooks are better suited to the slightly larger format of medium- to large-sized hardcover photo books. When embarking on a photo book project, be sure to spend a few moments thinking about the audience, intended use, and budget for your project before you begin.

Photo Book Design Tips

If you love photography and would like to store memories in your photography book then check out this great ideas on how to make a great personalized photo books.

Photo Book Design Tips

First, consider how you usually edit and group your photos. Many people group photos in chronological order in their photo books. This can sometimes lead to a sense of discontinuity across both pages of the two-page spread (the pages that face each other when the photo book lies open in front of you).

Instead of grouping photos chronologically, consider grouping your photos by theme, colour, or subject matter, since these will unify the look of your photo book pages. You can use this same tip when deciding which pages should face each other within the book. You may also want to experiment with the photo software on your computer, or with the software provided by the company that manages and prints your online photo books. You may be able to a add colour to each page as a background, or to change your colour photos to sepia or black and white-these can both really transform the look of your pages in your online photo book. An entire spread of black and white or sepia photographs will unify the design; adding one or two colour photos in the mix will really draw the eye to these images, creating a focal point for the page.

Creating one focal point for each page in the photo book is also a great idea. As you select and edit your photos, choose one or two close-ups or simple, crisp images that can serve as a focal point for every two-page spread of your book. As you take your photographs, keep these things in mind, as well. You can begin by taking a series of photos for every special event you attend; if you take between five and eight photos, you will be sure to have enough to choose from when it comes to designing a page or two in your photo book around this particular event. If you tend to take group photos, make sure you zoom in for close-ups of individuals or objects, and zoom out for wider landscape shots. If you tend to focus on landscapes or the environment, consider other subject matter to give your photo book variety: people, pets, or specific objects, for example.

As you design your pages, you can also think of how the reader’s eye moves across the page as she looks at the best photo books. Use repetition horizontally across a two-page spread, or else use a layout based on triangular or circular patterns so that the viewer’s eye will be led through the series of images. Some online book programs give you pre-designed pages, and other programs let you set up the page design yourself. Don’t be afraid to use several smaller photographs in your layout: several small images in a row can give the impression of a series of photographs taken in quick succession, or of a small sequential story being told.

Finally, in the art world, collage techniques are known to give interesting results. Collage in photo book design allows you to include a large number of images from various sources, all on the same page, without any need for formal organization. Some ideas might be a collage of favourite people, special events, a "day in the life of" page, or a collage featuring the same person or occasion, captured at different moments throughout the years.

Your Photography Book

  1. Weddings are an obvious choice for a photography book, and not just your own. Even if the wedding you are attending already has an official photographer, your photo book will make a great wedding gift. When you are taking photos, try to focus on things that the official photographer may miss, such as humorous dancers, or cute kids.
  2. Holidays are a great option, and your family and friends will certainly appreciate a photo book of any recent holiday get-togethers, whether they were able to attend or not. This is a great way to keep families together and in each other’s hearts and minds all year round.
  3. Whether you are an avid hiker or you just like to visit your local park a few time a week, putting together your Nature photos can be a rewarding experience. You can take photos of natural things like lakes, mountains, and trees, or you can record all the fun had on family camping trips and the like. Best of all, these photos can give you that touch of the outdoors to keep you going when the weather isn’t cooperating.
  4. Another great photography book theme is City Life. Get out and about in our hometown or wherever it is you are visiting, and get photos of the people, places and things that you see there.
  5. It may take a few years to get enough material for a book, but taking photos of a child on his or her Birthday from their first one on would make a great birthday gift in and of itself. Try to focus on recurring items like cakes, presents, and other attendees to ensure that the birthday theme is clear.
  6. You will really have to be on the ball for this one, but having a photographic record of as many of your Child’s Firsts as is possible would be something that will be cherished for a lifetime. You probably don’t need any extra encouragement to take pictures of your kid, but do make sure that you record such things as his or her first days, first steps, and first solid food.

  1. If you have a family member (or friend you’ve known for a long time), who is in the process of purchasing hid or her first home, it might be fun to put together a book of all of the other Homes he or she have lived in for as long as you’ve known them. There are probably a lot of great memories in those places, and your photo book would be much appreciated on such a big move forward.
  2. If you have a friend or family member who excels in Sports, put together best photo books of as many games as you can, including stories of their exploits. This will also be a treasured item as the years go on.
