Digital Photo Book

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

We used to print pictures from weddings and stick them into a wedding photo albums, sharing it with friends and family or for simply preserving precious memories. With the marriage of digital photography and digital publishing technology, everything changed and the ability to publish photographs in a coffee table style book (’subsidy or vanity publishing’ in legal terms) is now in reach of everyone with a digital camera, a computer and Internet access.

Digital Photo Book

While the technology for online photo sharing and online documents progresses, preparing a real best photo books with potentially hundreds of print resolution images and lines of text is better done offline. Photo book software is then able to optimize the files and the upload communication. Many photo book printing services are appearing in the UK; a comparison of two of the most compelling digital photo book contenders here:

Hints

Unlike computer prints photobooks will last for many generations. A photo book of family events or a holiday presents a personal memorybook. While the ‘Assistant’ Option in the CeWe Photo Book Software provided by FotoInsight can actually lay-out a photo book in less than the three minutes promised, taking more time, going back through the pages, adding some text and personal hints is highly recommended.

Less is More

Especially when images from several sources are being used (from friends cameras, mobile phones etc) it can be helpful to copy the image selection into a separate folder. Less is more applies for digital photo books, too. So skip poor or uninteresting images, as they will bore the spectator in a few years time. You may prepare some pages with many smaller images in scrapbook style and other pages with very few or even just a single image spreading over a double page, giving the reader a rest. Remember that preparing a coffee table style photo book is in now way different from publishing a book, which requires some proof reading, too.

Image editing

Avoid using hundreds of high-resolution images in one book as the computer might struggle with processing many large images. 200 ppi (in the corresponding format) is enough, it is not necessary to use jpegs larger than 1.5 MB, for most photos half a megabyte jpeg will do. Prepare entire pages as jpegs in Photoshop or other advanced editing packages to import these as a full page (page background) into the photo book.

Which service to use

Both services use software which needs to be downloaded and installed. This allows preparing the photo book offline in several sessions and optimizing the finished lay-out before uploading it for printing. Users who only want to make small books and are not comfortable with installing software may have a look at iPhoto, Snapfish or Kodak which offer a web browser based service. This however can not be recommended for larger, more elaborate books. The free software applications provided by the photo book printing services compared above use a different approach each and preference may depend on circumstances (e.g. Mac) and objectives (e.g. flexible lay-out, online sharing, time). Both FotoInsight as well as Printing-1 provide well printed and very enjoyable photo books.

Personalized Photo Book

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Sometimes is hard to choose the right present for your loved ones. Photo book can make a great present. The best photo books are those with personalized covers.

Personalized Photo Book

Last year I pondered this very question and after some research hit on the idea of a photo book. These books enable you to create your own hardback or paperback book, the pages of which are filled with photos of your choice. With some systems you can add annotations if you like, and you choose the arrangement and size of all the photos so you have total control.

For example, you could put all your best pictures of a babies first year in there. You could make your own photo book. One of a wedding or a favorite vacation. Or my personal favorite – a book featuring the photos of all the high points from the last year.

From photos of moving into your new home, to that weekend away, to having your first flying lesson, all the things that have made the last year special and memorable can be gathered together into one cohesive book as a wonderful way to remember what you have done and what you have experienced.

Many photographic shops offer this service though I personally used Lulu for my own. Being able to drag photos onto the page, rearrange them and reorder them at will makes for great fun – though sifting through all my photos to find the best ones, putting them in chronological order and deciding how best to display them took a lot longer than anticipated! So make sure you have the time necessary to make a really unique, original present.

Once you are happy with your design you can place your order and your photo book will be printed and dispatched to you ready for the big day. I just hope they appreciate all your hard work!

Photo Book Design Tips

Friday, March 5th, 2010

If you love photography and would like to store memories in your photography book then check out this great ideas on how to make a great personalized photo books.

Photo Book Design Tips

First, consider how you usually edit and group your photos. Many people group photos in chronological order in their photo books. This can sometimes lead to a sense of discontinuity across both pages of the two-page spread (the pages that face each other when the photo book lies open in front of you).

Instead of grouping photos chronologically, consider grouping your photos by theme, colour, or subject matter, since these will unify the look of your photo book pages. You can use this same tip when deciding which pages should face each other within the book. You may also want to experiment with the photo software on your computer, or with the software provided by the company that manages and prints your online photo books. You may be able to a add colour to each page as a background, or to change your colour photos to sepia or black and white-these can both really transform the look of your pages in your online photo book. An entire spread of black and white or sepia photographs will unify the design; adding one or two colour photos in the mix will really draw the eye to these images, creating a focal point for the page.

Creating one focal point for each page in the photo book is also a great idea. As you select and edit your photos, choose one or two close-ups or simple, crisp images that can serve as a focal point for every two-page spread of your book. As you take your photographs, keep these things in mind, as well. You can begin by taking a series of photos for every special event you attend; if you take between five and eight photos, you will be sure to have enough to choose from when it comes to designing a page or two in your photo book around this particular event. If you tend to take group photos, make sure you zoom in for close-ups of individuals or objects, and zoom out for wider landscape shots. If you tend to focus on landscapes or the environment, consider other subject matter to give your photo book variety: people, pets, or specific objects, for example.

As you design your pages, you can also think of how the reader’s eye moves across the page as she looks at the best photo books. Use repetition horizontally across a two-page spread, or else use a layout based on triangular or circular patterns so that the viewer’s eye will be led through the series of images. Some online book programs give you pre-designed pages, and other programs let you set up the page design yourself. Don’t be afraid to use several smaller photographs in your layout: several small images in a row can give the impression of a series of photographs taken in quick succession, or of a small sequential story being told.

Finally, in the art world, collage techniques are known to give interesting results. Collage in photo book design allows you to include a large number of images from various sources, all on the same page, without any need for formal organization. Some ideas might be a collage of favourite people, special events, a "day in the life of" page, or a collage featuring the same person or occasion, captured at different moments throughout the years.

Your Photography Book

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

If you are a passionate photographer then you probably considered of putting your work into photo book. Here are some great photo book ideas to help you make your own personalized photo book.

Your Photography Book

  1. Weddings are an obvious choice for a photography book, and not just your own. Even if the wedding you are attending already has an official photographer, your photo book will make a great wedding gift. When you are taking photos, try to focus on things that the official photographer may miss, such as humorous dancers, or cute kids.
  2. Holidays are a great option, and your family and friends will certainly appreciate a photo book of any recent holiday get-togethers, whether they were able to attend or not. This is a great way to keep families together and in each other’s hearts and minds all year round.
  3. Whether you are an avid hiker or you just like to visit your local park a few time a week, putting together your Nature photos can be a rewarding experience. You can take photos of natural things like lakes, mountains, and trees, or you can record all the fun had on family camping trips and the like. Best of all, these photos can give you that touch of the outdoors to keep you going when the weather isn’t cooperating.
  4. Another great photography book theme is City Life. Get out and about in our hometown or wherever it is you are visiting, and get photos of the people, places and things that you see there.
  5. It may take a few years to get enough material for a book, but taking photos of a child on his or her Birthday from their first one on would make a great birthday gift in and of itself. Try to focus on recurring items like cakes, presents, and other attendees to ensure that the birthday theme is clear.
  6. You will really have to be on the ball for this one, but having a photographic record of as many of your Child’s Firsts as is possible would be something that will be cherished for a lifetime. You probably don’t need any extra encouragement to take pictures of your kid, but do make sure that you record such things as his or her first days, first steps, and first solid food.

  1. If you have a family member (or friend you’ve known for a long time), who is in the process of purchasing hid or her first home, it might be fun to put together a book of all of the other Homes he or she have lived in for as long as you’ve known them. There are probably a lot of great memories in those places, and your photo book would be much appreciated on such a big move forward.
  2. If you have a friend or family member who excels in Sports, put together best photo books of as many games as you can, including stories of their exploits. This will also be a treasured item as the years go on.

Photo Book Ideas

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Making the best photo books has been a dream of many photographers since the beginning of photography.

Photo Book Ideas

Every house is full of photo books which chart history and are a pictorial representation of the family tree. Now that digital photography has replaced using film, and we are all happy snappers, it is possible to create albums for just about any occasion. Here are some excellent ideas for creating a photo book.

The perfect wedding present for a couple is a photo book that includes their life right up to the wedding day. Gather together any images you can from family and friends including images from when the bride and groom to be were children. It is obligatory that some of those most embarrassing photos of bath times as babies are included too! Dedicate a section to the day they met and if possible the night that one proposed to the other. The photo book should culminate in a collection of pictures of both the hen night and the stag night, just as long as it isn’t likely to start divorce proceedings on the wedding day!

The moment that a new baby comes into a family, all cameras are at the ready to try and capture that first smile, the first laugh and the first unaided steps. Out of the hundreds of pictures that are taken by aunties, uncles and grandparents, it is possible to create a bumper photo book that will be a treasured item for the parents and for the child as it grows.

When somebody moves away, whether it is to relocate for a job, go to university or to go travelling, it can be a difficult time as they miss family and friends. As a leaving gift make a photo book keepsake for them to take with them. Ask all their friends and family members to create a page each, with a few selected photos that are reminders of good times. As it is possible to add text to online digital photo books, add a brief note, maybe a fond farewell, or a reminder of a favourite time.

There are literally hundreds of reasons to make online photo books; maybe you want to create a collection of some of your best photos or put together an art portfolio. Whatever your reasons for making an album, let your imagination run as free as your photography skills.

Online Photo Books

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Photo books are meant to store your photos and preserve those precious memories forever. Here are some photo book projects tips.

Online Photo Books

If you are like many travelers, you will likely take many more photographs than you can easily store or sort. With the popularity of digital cameras, the tendency to snap photos of everything in sight is even greater. Often, photographs are left in files on the computer, and seldom enjoyed. Online photo books allow you to transfer images directly from digital media or computer files, meaning that your best photos can go directly into book format. You can then order as many copies as you want.

Another benefit of online photo books is that you can organize the book as you go, pulling images from various files without needing to sort through boxes, albums, or files full of prints, as you would need to do for a traditional scrapbook or photo album project. In addition, you can choose only the best files from your trip, meaning you can cut down on the number of duplicate images that often show up on albums featuring vacation or travel photos. Since you will be sorting and editing your photos ahead of time, the finished photo book will be a condensed and edited version of your favourite images, which can then be stored, displayed, and easily shared.

Making copies of best photo books is incredibly easy: simply order extra copies from the company providing the online photo book service. If your own project is fairly large, consider making a smaller book containing the highlights of your trip. A small format such as a 5" x 7" soft cover book is affordable, and can be ordered and shipped to family and friends.

When organizing your travel photos for your photo book, several things will help you cut down the time spent on organization, and will also keep your project unified. Before you begin, consider doing a "first cut" of favourite photos. If you were traveling with a group, or with friends or family members, have each person create a folder on the computer containing their favourite photographs. You can then compile a new folder containing everyone’s favourite photographs from the trip; this will reduce the amount of time spent searching for images or making editing decisions as you work on the photo book itself.

Once you get to work on the book layout, consider organizing some pages by theme and subject matter, instead of only placing images in the order they were taken during the trip. While many people organize their travel photographs chronologically, feel free to do a page or two of overall highlights, or images that were repeated several times during the trip. Some examples might include a collage of favourite photos of the travelers themselves, images of monuments, landmarks, sunsets, or particularly striking landscapes.

While your online photo book is a record of your trip, it can include personalized touches, humorous layouts, and images that stood out for good reason-or for no reason at all. Your photo book should reflect and celebrate you and your adventures, and does not necessarily have to be a photo-journalistic record of your travels.

Photo Book Projects

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Photo book is the best way to store you favorite photos from weddings, anniversaries and other special occasions.

Photo Book Projects

With a little planning and inspiration, you can create your own best photo books to preserve family traditions and recipes for years to come.

Smaller photo albums featuring recipes make fun and useful thank-you gifts that can be given out after a shared holiday or special event. If you are planning (or planning to attend) a wedding, family reunion, or anniversary celebration, consider compiling favourite recipes and featuring them in a photo book. The photo book can include heritage photos as well as current photos of the individuals at the event. Many people have a considerable number of photos from holiday celebrations and other festivals or festivities that would be perfect inclusions in a photo book. Consider including pictures of the same table set for a particular festival or celebration–and the rotating guests around the table–throughout the years.

Small recipe books can be given out as gifts to all who attend a wedding or anniversary celebration; photo books are the perfect way to preserve photographs and share traditions. Larger books might include numerous recipes from many different branches of the family. If relatives from far and wide are able to come together at a reunion or celebration, make sure to take photographs at the event itself for the photo book. These shared memories can then be recorded along with recipes contributed by various family members or friends.

If you find that you have a considerable number of recipes, but not enough photographs for the photo book itself, consider organizing your own photo shoot. Invite some friends or family members to help you create your version of some of the recipes. Take photos of the group preparing the food, and enjoying it once it is made. Make sure to take at least a few close-ups of the food itself! If you are using seasonal or festive recipes, don’t be afraid to get out props from around the house and re-create a fitting table setting.

On the other hand, if you end up with a considerable number of family photographs, but do not have many recipes, you may want to ask relatives to scan favourite hand-written recipe cards and then have them send the images to you as email attachments, or by mail. By scanning and copying original documents, you will be able to preserve recipes in their original, authentic hand-written form, and share them with others in the family. You might also consider searching the library or the internet for special recipes you think the recipients of the photo book might enjoy making.

The beauty of recipe books prepared this way is that online photo book is extremely easy to copy and print, and you can order whatever quantity you please. Photo Albums featuring favourite traditions and recipes make perfect thank-you gifts and souvenirs for weddings, anniversaries, reunions, milestone birthdays, or other special events.

Hardcover Photo Books

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Snapfish.com is one of the best online photo stores. They offer any kind of products related to photography. From calendars, digital cameras, albums and so on. Snapfish seems to be best well known for their creative photo book ideas.

Hardcover Photo Books

Photo books are created by the user, who uploads a set of their own digital photographs from their hard drive to the Snapfish website, and uses their robust editing software to assemble them into a bound hardcover book with text, backgrounds, borders, and other fun and appealing features. Photo book prices start at a low $19.99 for an 8×11 hardcover photo book with a linen cover, and 20 full color pages.

Before you can start designing best photo books with Snapfish you must first register on the website. To create a photobook, navigate to that section of the website and select the size you want to go with. For hardcover options they offer 8×8, 8×11, and 12×12. There are two different options for the 8×11 available – Leather or Linen covers with a "window" (showing a portion of the image on your first page), or a printed cover or jacket. You make these selections before entering the designing software, but you can change it later if you desire.

Before you start designing your photobook, you should first select and upload all of the images you want to use in that photo book. Once all of your images are uploaded, Snapfish offers to automatically design and fill in the photobook for you. While this makes your job super simple, it may not do things exactly as you would. Images are filled in in the order they’re uploaded, and page layouts are somewhat random. The design system will lay out your images in plenty of different ways. Sometimes it will put two images on a page with a text area, or one full page image with no text, or sometimes three images on one page and a page of text on the next. This is a great option for people who don’t want to spend a ton of time working on the book, but takes some of the personal touch out.

If you really want to dive in and make the best photo book you can, then you’re in luck – Snapfish’s design system is extremely robust. If you try to insert an image that is low resolution and won’t print well, you will be warned. You can also do photo adjustments from the design area, like resizing and cropping, flipping, rotating, red eye removal, color enhancement, brightness and contrast, and even color conversion (black and white, sepia, colorize).

You can also select page backgrounds and designs. You choose a "theme" before entering the designing area, but you can change every page individually if you prefer it that way. Just select the "Backgrounds" tab and drag and drop what you want onto the page. The "Layouts" tab is where you can choose how many images you want per page, if (and where) you want to place text, and the size and placement of images. There are a total of 78 different layouts to choose from, as well as "magic" layouts that allow you a much more customized layout experience. You can even add borders to your images here, but that option isn’t necessarily compatible with all layouts.

The hardest part of designing photo books is keeping track of which images you have and haven’t used, so that you don’t end up with duplicates, or leave some out. Snapfish makes your image management easy, however, by placing green checks next to images you’ve used. The full list of your images (and these checks) is found on the right hand side of the design area. If you decide you want to remove an image from use, or from your list, you can do that in this area as well.

Once you’ve completed your photobook, you can view a 3D rendering of what it should look like by clicking "Preview" at the bottom of the design area page. This is a navigable preview that lets you view pages in order, like you would if you were looking at the real book.

Snapfish.com makes some of the best photo books on the web, and hopefully with this article you are now better prepared to navigate their website, and design the best photobook possible.

Creative Photo Book Ideas

Friday, February 26th, 2010

People are buying professional photo books in order to preserve their most precious photographies. But here are some good tips on how to make your own photo book.

Creative Photo Book Ideas

Recipe Books: Why not gather your family’s favourite recipes and feature them along images of your favourite occasions and meals? Once a photo book is created, the completed file can be saved and shared, and printed on demand. Family members or friends can use the Internet to send photos and recipes back and forth. Contributors to the photo book can also scan recipes written out on recipe cards, and then send these to the person organizing the book. Graphic design shops or print shops may be able to scan images in bulk, for a set fee, if you need to save time. Scanning handwritten recipe cards means that you can preserve the personal feel of the recipe cards. This is particularly meaningful if the recipe has been passed down through several generations. Using online photo books to gather recipes together, you will be able to share these traditions with current family and friends, and preserve them for future generations.

Fundraising Projects: If you have a local charity or school that has a large upcoming fundraising event or project, consider offering to help by putting together a visual reminder of the event. You might also consider making the photo books into fundraising items themselves, which can be sold, and the profits donated to the featured charity. Ideas include: a photo album featuring pets, a recipe book with a special theme (this could be related to the charity, or else holiday themed, or focusing on healthy food choices). Another idea would be a nature journal, featuring local flora and fauna. Individuals associated with the organization or school can also be invited to take part in the photo album project as photographers or writers. For a fun twist, why not highlight local sights or landmarks. Young people could have fun identifying and then photographing humorous or distinctive landmarks such as signposts, doorways, gardens, or buildings. Be careful when using pictures of people; many schools or organizations require written permission from the individuals being photographed before the photos can be taken or used in print.

Books for the Wedding Party: Online best photo books are also ideal gifts to give to members of a wedding party; there is no need to use professional photographs in the books. You will find that many informal shots from the wedding-and preparations for it-will make beautiful additions to a photo book celebrating the event. Each project is unique. If you want to only include formal photos, you may want to ask one family member to be in charge of snapping formal photos at the same time the professional photographer does.

If the project is more informal, you might include pictures from the bridal shower, shopping and event planning, preparations on the wedding day, and casual photos of each member of the bridal party with the bride or groom. Including photographs of everybody when they were infants, kids, or teens is also a fun option. Use your judgment when including humorous photographs, since these photo books will be kept as mementos for years to come.

Professional Photo Books

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

There are many ways to store you most precious photos. You can store them in photo books or photo albums.

Professional Photo Books

Simply by enlisting the talents of a photographer and creating a stunning photographic portfolio, we show you how any artist can make a major impact with photo books to boost a move from amateur to professional arenas.

The term ’starving artist’ came about because creative industries were renowned for being a low paid profession. Although today it is possible to make a living from creative endeavors, the competition is tough, and as such, many artists, musicians and the like find that they work for next to nothing waiting for a breakthrough. To beat the competition and get to the top of the ladder in any creative industry, a person needs to promote themselves professionally to get noticed.

Best photo books are the latest way to present a portfolio to a prospective client, employer or gallery. The professionally bound book gives and aesthetic representation of what the artist thinks of their work. To this end, the production and layout should be tailored to reflect the nature of the contents and the industry it is aimed at. Design should be kept classic and clean, avoiding certain fonts and templates that are associated with holiday albums for example.

Ideally, there should be one image per page unless there are a series of images that need to be viewed together. It is also worth considering producing a page of thumbnails that acts as a contents or index page. This will make certain works easier to find and will give an overall reflection of the complete body of work. You may want to consider putting in a page of text that reflects on the motivation, inspiration and direction of the work, or a brief artist statement to give an overall package that encapsulates every aspect of your practice.

Make sure that all the images included are of a high quality, and well lit. It may be worth enlisting the talents of a design professional who can grade all the images so that the balance and tone is equal throughout the photo book. Ultimately, it is the amount of effort that is put into the production that will reflect your sincerity and passion about your personal projects.
